14th Greek/Australian International
Legal and Medical Conference
Cape Sounion 2nd-8th June 2013

Jack Harty

When we decided to start a rather unique gathering of Australian doctors and lawyers in Greece many of our critics said it wouldn’t work. What started off as a bit of a challenge in Athens in 1988, when the late Sir Zelman Cowen was our keynote speaker, has now grown to become an international highlight. That, of course, is due to you enthusiastic and loyal people who keep coming back to all the various places in Greece we have held meetings and also sharing your experiences with friends and colleagues around the world who have then joined us.

Now what of our 14th Conference? When we went searching in 2011 for our next location we saw lots of great venues but when we visited the Grecotel at Cape Sounion, at the foot of the Temple of Poseidon, we immediately knew that this would be a perfect site for our 2013 Conference. We are sure you will be delighted with our choice.

As to the Conference itself, the programme that has been put together by Professor Neville Yeomans, Program Committee Chair, is once again most impressive - three keynote speakers all outstanding in their fields: Justice J Dyson Heydon AC, Mr Simon McKeon AO and Dr Gerard Vaughan AM, not to mention the wealth of excellent submitted presentations we have been able to include at this conference. We are also delighted to have the support of the Australian Ambassador to Greece Ms Jenny Bloomfield, who has agreed to open the Conference.

As with past Conferences we have planned the week with a wonderful mix of stimulating professional presentations, great tours and fun social gatherings. Tours take in the very best of Athens, the many ancient sites near the capital, museums, shopping, wonderful restaurants in the Plaka and of course the Acropolis, all just an hour away from Sounion. Visits to Delphi and the Peloponnese are also offered. Our traditional “cruise day” this year is a trip on a private charter boat to the beautiful island of Hydra, which over the years has been home to many Australians including painter Sidney Nolan and author George Johnston who lived there with his wife Charmian Clift, and wrote the great Australian novel My Brother Jack.
Full details are further into this brochure, but suffice to say we have explored each and every tour from our Pre Tours to The Baltic States and Turkey and our post tours to Umbria and Morocco and once more offer you some unique travel experiences. We truly urge you to make your reservations as soon as possible as all the tours have of necessity a limited capacity.
Our Conference Manager, Jenny Crofts can assist with your registration and any queries you might have about the Conference or the tours. Also keep in mind our Travel Agents at Travelscene Toorak who have been briefed as to all your anticipated travel requirements, so get in touch with them at your convenience.

The hotel staff, the locals at Sounion and indeed all Greeks we spoke to look forward to being your hosts for the first week in June of next year. It has been a tough time in the last few years for the Greek nation but the people are determined to continue to do what they do best - that is great hospitality, the very best of Greek cuisine and local wines, and most importantly a genuine feeling of friendship to all visiting Australians.
I look forward to greeting you at Sounion.

Jack Harty, A.M.
