Songs

Vespers at Kirribilli (with thanks to A.A. Milne)

Little boy kneels at the foot of the bed,
Eyebrows so Bush-y, and shiny his head,
Hush, hush, whisper who dares,
John Winston Howard is saying his prayers!

Thank you God for the USA,
For my friend George, letting our troops stay.
What was the other thing I had to say?
Oh, thanks for keeping Costello at bay!

Wasn’t it fun in the House tonight?
Question Time gave me a bit of a fright -
“My fellow Australians” can sound rather trite,
Please, God, help my polls come out right.

If I open my fingers a little bit more,
I can see through the cracks in the Cabinet door -
There’s Brendan, who’s playing toy soldiers and planes,
And Malcolm (another one!) praying for rains!

At Kirribilli it’s early to bed,
Walking out early should keep me ahead.
Hush, hush, Kevin beware!
Crafty John Howard is saying his prayer.

Song of the Russian Tourist Coach Driver (Trad: Volga Boatman)

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho:

Tourists come, one by one,
Sometimes two by two they come.
Palaces, churches, souvenirs purchase,
Back on their coaches – off they go!

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho:

Tourists come, tourists stay,

Plenty of roubles they all pay.
Slowly we feed them, slowly we lead them
Back on their coaches, off they go!

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho, … hoi!

The lawyer and the doctor should be friends

The lawyer and the doctor should be friends,
Oh, the lawyer and the doctor should be friends:
One man quotes the law with ease,
The other quotes Hippocrates,
But that’s no reason why they can’t be friends!

Pro-fessional folk should stick together,
Ethical folk should all be pals.
Doctors dance with the lawyers’ ladies,
Lawyers dance with the doctors’ gals!

I’d like to say a word for the doctors,
They’re on call every day and half the night,
They write you a prescription for each ailment -
It’s a pity you can’t read a thing they write!

The lawyer is an honorable citizen,
Who sees some good in every low-down criminal,
The cases that he tries can bring tears to your eyes -
So does his scale of fees - they’re not subliminal!

The lawyer and the doctor should be friends,
Oh, the lawyer and the doctor should be friends:
Take care what the taxman sees,
Share each other’s expertise,
And that’s the reason why we’re all good friends!

The Greeks and the Australians should be friends,
Yes, the Greeks and the Australians should be friends:
The Aussies like to travel far,
The Greek’s quite comfy at the bar,
And that’s the reason why we’re all good friends!

Pro-fessional folk should stick together,
Ethical folk should all be pals.
Doctors dance with the lawyers’ ladies,
Lawyers dance … with the doctors’ gals!
